Super Typhoon Fung-wong slammed into the Philippines’ eastern seaboard on Sunday, the national weather service said, after killing at least two people and forcing more than a million to evacuate vulnerable areas at risk of flash floods, landslides and tidal surges.
Heavy rain and strong winds cut power in large areas before the storm made landfall in Aurora province on the main island of Luzon at 9.10pm, the state forecaster reported.
The typhoon, locally known as Uwan, is the biggest to threaten the Philippines this year and could cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago with its 1,600km (994 mile) wide rain and wind band.
Authorities warned of a “high risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge” of more than three metres (nearly 10 feet) along the coasts of over 20 provinces and regions, including metropolitan Manila.
The civil defence office reported on Sunday that a villager drowned in flash floods on the island of Catanduanes, and firefighters recovered the body of a 64-year-old woman trapped under a collapsed home in the city of Catbalogan on the island of Samar.
