Beijing has lashed out at a US legislative committee for a report urging more sanctions on Hong Kong, saying it smeared the financial hub’s business environment and achievements while blatantly interfering in the city and China’s internal affairs.
The Hong Kong government also condemned the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) on Wednesday over its annual report released the previous day, criticising its “groundless attacks, slanders and smears” against various aspects of the city’s political and business environment.
The Chinese foreign ministry’s arm in Hong Kong said the report smeared the city’s business environment and achievements, and the accusations it made were totally “groundless”.
The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong said the successful implementation of the “one country, two systems” governing principle was recognised in the world, while the city’s national security laws better safeguarded stability and the business environment.
“We urge the relevant US politicians to stop fabricating so-called annual reports and immediately cease interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs,” said a spokesman for the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong.
