Chinese earthquake rescuers arrive in Myanmar as Xi speaks to junta chief

A Chinese rescue team arrived in Myanmar on Saturday to help with rescue efforts following the devastating earthquake as President Xi Jinping spoke to the junta head to offer his condolences.

The 37-strong team from the southwest province of Yunnan was equipped with detectors, earthquake early warning systems, a portable satellite and drones for disaster relief, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Friday’s 7.7-magnitude quake was the most powerful to hit the country in decades and has killed at least 1,000 people and injured 2,400, according to the Myanmar authorities.

The death toll is expected to rise significantly and with communications badly disrupted in the isolated state, the true picture is still unknown.

China’s foreign ministry said that so far it had received no reports that any Chinese nationals were among the dead.

On Saturday, Xi Jinping made a call to junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to express his condolences, while Premier Li Qiang also offered his.
