Malaysians swap hotels for RVs to drive down holiday costs

Once a symbol of the all-American road trip, recreational vehicles (RVs) are enjoying a surge in popularity in Malaysia as families seek cheaper, more adventurous holidays – and as the government moves to develop more dedicated RV parks and streamline related regulations.

The trend reflects a broader shift across the Asia-Pacific, where a growing middle class in China, Australia and Japan is fuelling demand for road trips and camping holidays, according to market research firm Mordor Intelligence.

Sales of RVs in Malaysia have surged in recent years, according to companies in the sector.

Among the new enthusiasts is musician Hazrilfitri Hadzir, who co-produces RV travel vlogs with his wife and whose family is planning a five-day journey around peninsular Malaysia during the coming school break.

“Travelling with an RV has been a new experience for us,” he told This Week in Asia. “After four years of owning one, we enjoy the freedom to explore without thinking about accommodation costs, and we can move at our own pace.”

He said RV travel suited his family’s needs as his autistic son could feel more comfortable.
