5 wellness things to do this weekend July 26-28 in Hong Kong, including a ninja challenge

Building a better brain – through reading – at a morning reading club. Learning ninja skills to finish an obstacle course faster than your friends. Sweating it all out in a yoga flow. Learning to dance. This weekend, you are spoiled for healthy choices.

1. AIA One Billion Week’s ninja challenge

An outdoor ninja challenge will take place at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and AIA Vitality Park, where people can compete in a contest to conquer 11 obstacles in the fastest time.

For those less skilled, certified coaches will be hosting workshops and teaching basic ninja skills, including swinging, hand-eye coordination, jumping techniques and climbing.

The 50-minute workshops are suitable for those aged six and up; children aged 10 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Those aged 16 and above are welcome to take part in the challenge, which has a time limit of 50 minutes. If they fall, they must start again from the beginning.

Workshops will run throughout the week (July 27-August 4) and the challenge sessions will run mostly during the evenings. The event is free, but you must register and reserve a ticket.

Under-18s must have a parent or guardian fill out their registration forms. Further details can be found on zicket.co.

3. Flowga’s Sweat n’ Release yoga flow

Expect to sweat in this all-level yoga class, which focuses on deeper stretching for the primary muscle groups and takes place under infrared panels.

The hot room, in which the temperature ranges from 35 to 40 degrees Celsius (95 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit), will make Hong Kong’s hottest days feel like a breeze. But do not worry – you will still be able to breathe easy without feeling stuffy or uncomfortably hot.

The instructor blends alignment-based instruction with strength and mobility-training principles to challenge participants to get out of their comfort zones.

The class takes place on Saturday, July 27, between 2.30pm-3.30pm, and the drop-in class fee is HK$300 (US$38).

5. AIA Vitality Hub’s youth locking dance class

Locking is an exaggerated style of dance invented by American dancer Don Campbell, who added freezes or stops to a dance that are held for a short while before dancing resumes. These stops become known as locks and are done to energetic funk music.

This Sunday, July 28, learn how to lock with the best of them at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and AIA Vitality Park in a class that takes place from noon until 12.50pm. The introductory class is free and aimed at people aged 16-25.
