Maintaining an ideal weight is a struggle for many people. A diet of heavily processed foods, insufficient physical activity and other factors can make it especially difficult for those who are overweight or obese to shed excess kilograms.

David Koo knows what it is like to carry around unwanted weight. For most of his life, the 60-year-old Hong Kong-based investor was, in his words, “big”.

He was a “plump” child who, by the age of 12, was already wearing adult-sized trousers. As he got older, the weight continued to pile on.

“I assumed that my size was genetic because the men in my mother’s family are tall and heavy-set, but I also just loved food and eating,” says Koo, who was born to Chinese parents in Montreal, Canada, and moved to Hong Kong permanently in 2001.

Alcohol was also a huge part of Koo’s life.

While at boarding school in the United Kingdom, he would regularly drink large quantities of sherry, wine, beer and spirits.
