3 dead in Israeli strikes on Yemen’s airport, ports and power stations

Israel’s military said it struck multiple targets linked to the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen on Thursday, including Sana’a International Airport and three ports along the western coast.

Attacks hit Yemen’s Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations as well as military infrastructure in the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Kanatib, Israel’s military added.

The World Health Organization’s director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the bombardment took place nearby as he prepared to board a flight in Sanaa, with a crew member injured.

“The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge – just a few meters from where we were – and the runway were damaged,” Ghebreyesus said on social media.

He added that he and United Nations colleagues were safe. “We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave,” he said, without mentioning the source of the bombardment.

There was no immediate comment from the Houthis. The Israeli strikes followed several days in which Houthis have repeatedly fired drones and missiles towards Israel in what they describe as acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
