Hong Kong’s Cinema Day has drawn a record-breaking 201,000 film-goers, despite a marginal decline in occupancy rates compared with last year.

The Hong Kong Theatres Association, which organises the annual event, revealed the figures on Sunday, just a day after 52 cinemas offered HK$30 (US$3.83) movie tickets for 1,694 screenings.

“It marks a new high for the event, with 201,000 admissions and an average occupancy rate of 81 per cent,” a post on the promotion’s social media page read.

“Families, the elderly and young people joined. Cinemas were packed with a vibrant atmosphere!”

The footfall marked a 3.2 per cent increase from 2025’s event, when 194,755 people flocked to cinemas. But the overall occupancy rate fell by two percentage points from the 83 per cent recorded last year.

The association added that shopping centres, restaurants and retail outlets had launched promotions as part of this year’s event, boosting the city’s economy and cultural development.
